Evaluation...

The brief for this project was to create a video, the video could be solely of still images or a mixture of images and footage. The video could contain audio of either self-made, un copyrighted or self-recorded. The theme for the video was 'a point of view' which left it quite wide open to pursue any direction you wish. The video has to have some link or connection to seminal texts. The video has to be outputted in Adobe Premiere.

My idea came as inspiration from the book Image Makers Image Takers, in which a wide range of photographers are questioned about several aspects of their photography. This sparked an idea to create a point of view (as the theme suggests), I had several questions in mind to use for my video so tested them out in the studio. After seeing which provoked the best answers I chose the question 'Why do you take photographs?'. As the models I had to hand were photography student I thought this would evoke some interesting answers. I would ask several models this question and ask them to write down their answer on an OHP projector while I filmed their hand movement. I would then photograph them in front of the projector with the words of their answer projected on their bodies. There were certain elements that I found out I needed to change after my first shoot. The models needed to wear white clothing so that the text is seen more clearly and they needed to use a thicker marker pen to write their answers again to make the writing clearer. I then recorded them speaking their answers to use as audio. All of this footage and stills would create my short video.

My reasoning for making this video was to get people thinking. These days the majority of people have a camera, most people carry one with them at all times (on their mobile phones) so I wanted to stop people for a moment and get them thinking 'why do they take photographs?' People tend to just snap away, selfies, images of the food they've eaten but there is something that interests us all about documenting our life and viewing it through a lens. I intend for this video to be an online viral video that people come across without clicking on it, I hope it'll make them stop and think about why they take photographs in this fast moving world of imagery.

Adobe Premiere isn't a piece of software that I have used before so having six weeks to make footage, images and learn how to use premiere was a bit daunting at first. When I had solidified my idea it was a case of getting the content and experimenting with premiere to put it all together. I'll be honest the software did scare me a little with all the different parts to it on one screen but after workshops with John I started to figure it out.

To create the opening title I used singular letters displayed for less than a second to make it look like the title is being typed on the screen. I tried to do this through animation or effects on adobe premiere but as I am not very familiar with the software and couldn't see a way to do this via animation. I decided to do it using the title option on premiere, where you can create titles of many different styles. I used a downloaded font called 'Mom's Typewriter' and used layers of singular letters to make the effect of typing.

For the audio part of the video I used sound from the models speaking their answers, then I used an online website called UJAM to create a piece of audio to go with the silent parts of footage I have shot. I used different beats and tunes to create a unique and new piece of audio so that it was my own.

If I were to have more time to work on this project or were to do it again I would spend more time making my footage making sure there are no camera shakes or background noise. I would have more time experimenting on premiere to get to grips with more advanced aspects of it to have a more refined video.

Fourth Photoshoot...

After feedback from my tutor he suggested that i try to get one more model for the deadline to just enhance the message at the end when all the footage is overlapped to show that there are so many opinions and reasons to why people take photographs.

Music accompaniment...

When putting the video together i didn't plan to use any music but when i had finished doing a rough draft i realised that during the parts where they are writing on the projector it is a little quiet and feels like it was lacking some sound.

After lots of messing around to see how to work it i created a piece that i quiet liked. Whether it will go with the video we will have to see.

After adding the music to the video i feel that it fits rather well and adds the something that was lacking to the video. Now i have learnt how to mix up my own tracks which is another skill I didn't have before we started this brief.

My plan for the future of this video...

I have made this video inspired by the answers i found in the book image makers image takers.  I wanted to produce a short video which will be uploaded onto the internet as an online viral video to get people thinking 'Why they take photographs?'. These days the majority of people own some sort of camera even if its just the one on their phone but we never stop to think why we are taking photographs? it doesnt have to be a complicated answer but i just want it to get people thinking.

At the end of the video i will overlay all of the videos of the models saying their answers so that you can both see and hear all of their answers over the top of each other. It will result in a mash up of sound showing that there are so many answers to that one questions and no matter what your answer is there is no wrong answer.

Third photoshoot...

For the third photoshoot i used Kieran and was meant to be using Siobhan but she didn't turn up on the day so i had to use myself. When showing my progress to Les he thought it would be best to get four people so i am going to try my best to find another appropriate model.

Here are the results from the third shoot...

Throughout the three photo shoot's i have also shot two styles of video, one videoing their hand writing over the projector and another of them saying their answer. I have struggled to upload these onto the blog but they will be in the final video.

Futher Experimentation...

There were a few slight problems with my previous shoot in the studio so i knew i needed to book in again to correct those errors.

The things i needed to change were:
- make sure the models are wearing white
- use a thicker marker pen for the models to write with
- choose a different question

The question i used last time was 'how do you feel about having your photograph taken without giving consent?'. I felt the answers didn't provoke much opinion or emotion and as all my models were photographers they all gave a pretty similar answer.

I have struggled to find 'non-photographer' models so i feel this question will not work. Because of the struggle to find a 'non-photographer' model i realised it would be best to adapt the question to get the best answers out of my current models.

I started to research key/current debates in photography and whilst watching The Genius Of Photography i heard Nan Goldin being questioned about why she takes photographs? her response was 'Photographs enable you to never loose anyone and to hold onto these memories'. After hearing this i was inspired to use 'Why do you take photographs?' as my question.

I decided to take on board the things that needed changing and my new question and arrange a new shoot.

I videoed the models writing their answers then photographed them with their answer projected onto them and filmed them saying their answer.

I hope to start the short video with the question so 'Why do you take photographs?' then show the clip of them writing their answer then overlay the model speaking their answer with the still image of them being projected onto. This will happen for each model ( i am hoping to get at least 4) then at the end of the video i will overlay all the models speaking their different answers so it is a mash together of them all which will result in an overload of speech and end the video with 'What's your point of view?'

I feel this short video will evoke questions in everyones minds as to why they take photographs whether they are photographers or not? Do you take photographs because they look nice or is there a meaning behind them?

I have planned out the structure of my video which can be seen below...

Projection...

As i am experimenting with projection in my shoots i have researched into other photographers that use projection in their work.

The first artist i came across was Davis Ayer, he tends to personalise each shot to make them quite distinctive. He uses long exposures, double exposures and projections to make his images unique.

I am so glad i found Ayer as i am really inspired by his work and would love to continue my projection of words into words and images as well and experiment with it.

Here are some of his images...

Lee Kirby is another photographer who uses projection in his work.
